PHYSIOLOGY OF URINE FORMATION

By richardmukwena • a week ago • 1893 views • 714 comments

In order to forms urine the kidneys have to carry out 3 processes; glomerulus filtration, tubular reabsorption and tubular secretion.

1. Glomerulus, The glomerulus is a network of capillaries surrounded by a cuplike structure, the bowmans cupsule. As blood flows through the glomerulus, blood pressure pushes water and solutes from the capillaries into the cupsule through a filtration membrane.

2. Reabsorption, this is when nutrients and water move back into the blood stream. The glomerulus filters water and small solutes out of the blood stream. The resulting filtrate contains waste but also other substances the body needs such as essential ions, glucose amino acids and smaller proteins. As the filtrate exits the glomerulus, it flows into a duct in the nephrone called the renal tubule. As it moves the needed substances and water are reabsorbed through the tube wall into adjacent capillaries.

3secretion, the filtrate absorbed in the glomerulus flows through the renal tubule, where nutrients and water are absorbed into capillaries, at the same time, waste ions and hydrogen ions pass through the capillaries into the renal tubule. Secreted ions combine with remaining filtrate and become urine. The urine flows out of the nephrone tubule into a collecting duct. It passes out of the kidneys through the renal pelvis into the the ureter and down to the bladder.
