Intussusception is a bowel disease where the intestines fold into each other, a mechanism called Telescoping. It mainly occurs in the ileo-cecal region of the GIT. Intussusception can occur on both adults and children.
most common causes of intussusception is lymphoid hyperplasia which involves the swelling of the lymph nodes in the ileum lumen( the payers patches). The other common cause is meckele's diverticulum where a growing polyp on the intestines diverts into the cecum of the colony driving the rest of the intestine into that region causing intussusception.
clinical symptoms in adults include; Abdominal pain in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen, red currant jelly stool nausea and fever. In children; the child may guild the abdomen, swat away from the hands of the caregiver and pull the legs to the chest, abdominal pain and fever
Treatment of intussusception include; Barium meal, Air enema and surgery.
