How do I take care of a physically disabled person?

By joshmunko • 2 weeks ago • 911 views • 312 comments

was pawing through the Target sales rack a year and a half ago, popping up from my wheelchair occasionally and bracing myself on the end of my freshly bandaged still-healing stump to reach the upper shelves. I had been a lower limb amputee a little more than six weeks or so, and did not have my prosthetic yet. My sister Joy was down the aisle a ways, examining a soccer ball on clearance with my niece and nephew. As I turned reluctantly to replace a rainbow pom-pommed throw pillow to the discounted melee (A WANT not a NEED, I chided myself firmly), a deafening squeal pierced the membrane of my right ear, in a register generally reserved for albino baby elephants and pandas with perms.

“Ooooooooh, you POOR, DARLING THING!!!” She was on top of me before I knew what was happening. My single startled foot slipped, and I bounced back down into the wheelchair

“Oooooo!!! You’re doing so good!!!” The stranger continued, chortling and clapping her hands as if I’d just gone potty. She looked to be mid-fifties (age AND IQ), and sported magenta-framed eyeglasses that covered two-thirds her face. They complemented a sweatshirt adorned with cartoon characters which each bore their own head of tousled yarn-hair. Without pausing to introduce herself, she launched into a narrative about a man at her nephew’s church who lost BOTH— “Not just ONE,” waggled the finger, “BUT TWO,” holding up two fingers, in case there was some misunderstanding on my part— legs, to “a parachuting accident!! Or was it diabetes?” Anyway, the point is that her nephew brings “this poor man” his groceries each week— “Alan is such a good boy!”— and now, on a presumably unrelated note, “he thinks this is the best thing that ever happened to him, and he wouldn’t change a thing!” she concluded triumphantly.

“Your nephew or the amputee?” I asked helpfully, trying to hide my rage. An uncertain smile flickered across her lips, but, evidently deciding I am too wheelchair-bound to make a joke about the proper use of pronouns and must therefore be confused, she simply cocked her head to one side and bent uncomfortably far down into my personal space, murmuring “Awww, you’ll understand someday.”

Then, as I am blinking and deciding exactly what topped her hot dog at lunch (sauerkraut, definitely sauerkraut, and chili, and is that Grey Poupon?), she has planted an enormous, candy-store lip-glossed, loosen-your-dentures, wet kiss on my forehead, which she smeared for apparent emphasis down my nose. I WAS FLABBERGASTED. I mean literally, my GAST was straight-up FLABBED out all over that place. Had I been rational at the time, I might have reasoned that this was assault, and confined as I was to a wheelchair, I was well within my rights to defend myself. In point of fact, there was no such reasoning taking place, and if Joy hadn’t appeared just in the nick-of-time, I might have decked her (the lady, not Joy) for the sheer thrill of it. After all, I still had both FISTS.

Alas, Joy DID arrive just in time, matched the cherry pink sparkle on my forehead to the remainder on a stranger’s lips, and pirouetted my wheelchair away with a cheerful, “Gotta go!!”https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-take-care-of-a-physically-disabled-person
